Stop, Drop, and Shoot: The Magazine Assignment

Magazine images come in all shapes and sizes. Kevin Scanlon, a freelance portrait photographer, will cover many aspects of what it takes to be a successful magazine shooter, and what comes with the territory. From newsworthy, everyday people, to the most powerful of celebrities, learn what to expect when that assignment comes. Scanlon will take you from the beginning to the end, including how to compile a list of photo editors, the basics of marketing to magazines, the right questions to ask when an assignment is issued, executing a photo shoot (including preparation, portrait basics, lighting, and shooting environments), basics in post-production with digital capture, and image delivery. Also covered will be one of the most important aspects of being a successful magazine photographer - troubleshooting! This six-week course will provide you the fundamental skills necessary to take the next step in becoming a successful magazine photographer.
Kevin Scanlon (www.kevinscanlon.com) is an award-winning freelance portrait photographer. In 2001, he quit his day-job as a database administrator to become a professional photographer in Arizona, before moving to Los Angeles in 2003. His clients include LA Weekly, New York Times, Forbes, Time, and Virgin Records. His early work consisted primarily of music photography, and his images appeared on Weezer t-shirts and Jimmy Eat World album artwork. His recent LA Weekly covers have included portraits of Jodie Foster, Sean Penn, Cate Blanchett, and Tenacious D (Kyle Gass and Jack Black). He lives in Los Feliz with his wife, Shelley.
