The Photojournalistic Approach with Six Different Photographers

The buzzword these days seems to be to “shoot in the photojournalistic way.” Here is a six-week class, taught by six different photojournalists, intended to teach the journalistic way. With Julia Dean serving as the thread, each week brings a different award-winning photojournalist. After discussing his or her work and style, the guest photojournalist will then provide a specific assignment relating to their own style of work. Weekly critiques follow as the next guest photojournalist discusses and evaluates the students’ previous assignment.

Discussions will also include such topics as how to approach people, how to capture the essence of the subject’s world, as well as the ethics and responsibilities of photographing people. Participants will learn how to capture the moment, how to tell a story in a photograph, how to compose, and which lenses to use to simplify backgrounds or to create a three-dimensional effect. The goal for each student is to learn how to shoot candidly and, more importantly, how to apply this candid style to their own photographic world.
