The Perfect Exposure & Composition Class in Black & White

© Julia Dean
This two-day workshop is for intermediate photographers who want to concentrate on the art and technique of seeing and shooting in black and white, whether with a digital camera or with black and white film. The first class concentrates on exposure and the second deals with composition and light. Day one begins with a lecture on how to use a light meter, how to expose properly in various lighting situations, why and when to change the ISO, and how to expose for digital cameras in comparison to exposing for black and white negative film. Once participants have a solid grasp on using a reflected light meter, Julia will introduce a simplified version of the zone system of exposure for 35 mm users.
The second class will begin with a critique, followed by a lecture on composition, how to see light, and how to create contrast in black & white. Further information will include when to use what lenses, how to use a tripod, and when to use filters. Specific shooing assignments will be given throughout both days of the workshop to practice various exposure and compositional techniques. The objective of this course is to understand exposure, become more attuned to good composition, and to learn to see in black and white.
