Master Class in Fine Art Photography

The Master Class, conducted by internationally known photographer and educator Loren Hammer, is designed to inspire each participant's unique "voice through vision" in which the conscious and subconscious work in conjunction to create photographs mirroring each participant's unique photographic world-view. Loren Hammer's years of experience in the worlds of art and applied art will add practical knowledge to each student's understanding of the techniques involved in creating artistic photographs, both in the realm of digital and silver-based (and alternative) image-making. Issues central to photographic creation, including technical knowledge of lighting, camera and chemistry, as well as techniques in the use of Photoshop and digital photography, will be demonstrated and discussed. Guest speakers from the photographic industry will be invited. Over the course of ten weeks, students will be expected to create a new body of work which treads new water and challenges their traditional view of photography. The goal is to produce a selection of images reflective of each student's vision, culminating in a group exhibition at the Julia Dean Gallery.
Acceptance into The Master Class is by application only. Students interested in applying are required to submit a body of work which best represents their artistic expression. Please send a cover letter and a selection of 10-12 low-res images and send via email to workshops@juliadean.com. Please do not send hi-res images.
Loren Hammer's (www.lorenhammer.us) holistic approach to art and teaching is both entertaining and challenging; a rich background in the classic film aesthetics of Hollywood combining with aesthetic theory, semiotics, anthropology and the contemporary Zeitgeist combine to produce a uniquely rich and rewarding learning experience. An educator and award-winning photographer with over 25 years experience working in fashion and commercial photography, his stylized photographs for fashion designers Yohji Yamamoto, Norma Kamali and Chantal Thomas and his editorial work for GQ, Vogue Homme, and Vanity Fair are known for their elegant and graphic composition and strong design sense. A MFA graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Hammer spent two years studying composition and design with William Tsinski, a student of cubist Enrico LaBron, and has collaborated with artists Jon Kessler, Cindy Bernard, and many others. He has lived and worked in the United States, Europe and Asia.
