Approaches to Photographing People

© Josh Sanseri
This one day crash course in portrait photography builds the foundation for fresh approaches to people photography whether you’re in the studio or at a far away location. The day begins with several basic lighting demonstrations in the studio. Topics for demonstration include use of artificial and natural light, soft and hard light sources, available modifiers, and how to combine the many options to make beautiful light and fulfill your photographic vision.
Participants will apply the newly learned techniques to their first assignments of the day, which will take place in the studio. During critique, we will discuss the strengths and weaknesses from each photographer’s morning shoot. In the afternoon, more demonstrations take place on location where lighting, framing, and subject rapport are emphasized. Appropriate assignments will follow with the final critique at the end of the day. Upon concluding the workshop, participants will have the technical skill and inspiration to approach photographing people with confidence.
