Intermediate Photography: Finding Your Vision

Aline Smithson

Photographers often learn the bells and whistles of their equipment, but get stuck when figuring out what to shoot, or how to create a body of work.  How do you stay inspired by a subject and return to it again and again? How do you creatively express your own, unique point of view? One of the best ways for a photographer to discover his or her personal vision is by experimenting with the unfamiliar, whether it be using a toy camera, looking at the world in a new way, or examining a subject that has gone unnoticed. Each week we will study different genres of contemporary photography, explore strong bodies of work, and discuss why they are significant. Some of the genres explored are humor, narrative, domestic landscapes, cataloguing, story telling, documentary and abstractions. Weekly assignments will be based on the work shown and will be critiqued during the next class.  This course will allow students the opportunity to experiment with different mediums and develop a true sense of their vision and purpose as a photographer.

Unlock new creative energies and come prepared for a workshop filled with inspiration, fun and self-discovery.

After a career as a New York City Fashion Editor and working alongside the greats of fashion photography, Aline Smithson (www.alinesmithson.com) discovered the family Rolleiflex and never looked back. Now represented by galleries across the country and published throughout the world, Aline continues to explore her award-winning photography with humor, compassion, and a 50-year-old camera.
