The Sensual Portrait
with Douglas Kirkland

Sensuality is not an obvious statement. It is the subtle pursuit of a certain quality in beings. It is learning to look at your subjects lovingly and to bring out their love for themselves. As Donatella Versace once said "A woman has to be sensual, not sexy, which can be aggressive or vulgar. Sexy all the way is Eighties - sensuality is timeless."

This course will explore the philosophy and technique of photographing beauty in its most sensual form and will focus on making meaningful images of people. We will cross the boundaries of the traditional portrait. Working with models (nude and clothed) on location and in the studio, students will explore lighting and techniques to best bring out drama, sensuality and human connections. Douglas will also demonstrate his techniques in capturing the essence of a subject during this stimulating, visually charged workshop.

Douglas Kirkland (www.douglaskirkland.com) has been photographing for over four decades and his passion in the discovery of human beauty and sensuality never wavers. He is best known for his celebrity portraits as well as commercial and fine art photography. He started his career at Look and Life Magazine in the 60's and 70's "golden age" of photojournalism. He has worked on the set of over 100 motion pic¥tures (2001: A Space Odyssey, Out of Africa, Moulin Rouge) and his iconic images of Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Jack Nicholson, Angelina Jolie and Antonio Banderas among others are known all over the world. He has received numerous awards among which a Lucie for Outstanding Achievement in Entertainment Photography in 2003, The Golden Eye of Russia in April 2006, and a Life Time Achievement Award from CAPIC in his native Toronto Canada in May 2006. Douglas currently resides in the Hollywood Hills with his wife and business partner, Francoise.
